CNN has aired a 1-hour long program reviewing the “25 Most Shocking Medical Mistakes”. The program highlights the widespread problems of preventable medical errors, and the devastating impact these errors have on patients and their families. While some mistakes are not due to malpractice — theft of a newborn or a con artist pretending to be a doctor, for example — almost all of the others are directly related to the type and quality of care provided. As one of the experts they interviewed stated, errors “mistakes and happening every day, in every hospital.” More must be done to stop them.
Here are a few of the highlights of the CNN story:
Hospital acquired infections
Operating on the wrong patient
Operating on the wrong body part
Failure to give a correct diagnosis
Surgical implements left after surgery
Wrong dosage amounts
